Surgical Expectations & Outcomes

1. Purpose and Scope

This Surgical Expectations & Outcome Policy (“Policy”) outlines SRGN Clinic‘s approach to setting realistic expectations for cosmetic surgery outcomes, managing variability in results, and addressing Patient concerns.

Cosmetic surgery is intended to enhance appearance and confidence but involves inherent biological, anatomical, and healing variables. This Policy ensures Patients understand the limitations, influencing factors, and Clinic processes for outcome management. This Policy forms an integral part of the informed consent process and surgical governance at SRGN Clinic. It applies to all cosmetic procedures performed at our facilities. In the event of any inconsistency between this Policy and any other documentation provided by SRGN Clinic to the Patient, this Policy shall prevail to the extent of the inconsistency.

2. Definitions

For the purposes of this Policy:

  •  “Clinic” means SRGN Clinic.
  •  “Patient” means the individual undergoing or considering the Procedure.
  • “Procedure” means any cosmetic surgery or treatment provided by the Clinic.
  • “Surgeon” means the qualified medical professional performing the Procedure.
  • “Outcome” means the aesthetic and functional results of the Procedure, including healing
    and long-term effects.

3. Nature of Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is an elective intervention aimed at improving aesthetic appearance rather than treating medical conditions or diseases. While Surgeons at SRGN Clinic strive to deliver optimal results using advanced techniques and best practices, no guarantees or warranties can be provided regarding Outcomes.

Cosmetic surgery cannot assure:

  • Perfect symmetry or balance.
  • Complete elimination of anatomical variations.
  • Invisible or absent scars.
  • Permanent results are immune to ageing, gravity, or lifestyle changes.

All Procedures involve biological healing processes that are subject to individual variation. Patients should approach cosmetic surgery as a means of enhancement or improvement, not as a pathway to perfection or transformation.

4. Variability in Surgical Outcomes

Surgical Outcomes are influenced by multiple uncontrollable and variable factors, including but not limited to:

4.1 Individual Anatomy

  • Unique bone structure, muscle distribution, and soft tissue characteristics.
  • Skin quality, elasticity, and thickness.
  • Genetic predispositions to healing and response to surgery.

These elements determine the realistic achievability of desired results.

4.2 Healing and Scar Formation

  • Individual healing responses may lead to thicker, raised, or hypertrophic/keloid scars.
  • Prolonged swelling, bruising, or temporary asymmetry during recovery.
  • Gradual improvement over time, but not always to the extent anticipated.

4.3 Ageing and Natural Changes

  • Natural processes such as skin laxity, gravitational effects, hormonal shifts, and environmental exposures continue post-Procedure.
  • Long-term alterations due to these factors may diminish or change initial results.

Outcomes may differ from pre-operative simulations or discussions due to these variables.

5. Time Required for Healing

Patients must recognise that healing is a gradual process, and final Outcomes may not be immediately visible. Typical timelines include:

  • Initial swelling, bruising, and discomfort resolve within the first few weeks.
  • Tissue settling and contour refinement over 3-6 months.
  • Scar maturation and full stabilisation typically require 6-12 months or longer.

During this period, minor irregularities, asymmetries, or concerns may resolve naturally without intervention. Premature assessments of Outcomes are discouraged.

6. Factors Influencing Results

Certain lifestyle, medical, and external factors can positively or negatively impact Outcomes. These include, but are not limited to:

6.1 Lifestyle Factors

  • Smoking or nicotine use, which impairs circulation and healing.
  • Excessive alcohol consumption or recreational drug use.
  • Poor nutrition or dietary habits.
  • Overexposure to sun or environmental stressors.

6.2 Medical Factors

  • Conditions such as diabetes, vascular disease, or autoimmune disorders.
  • Medications or supplements that affect blood clotting, inflammation, or healing.

6.3 Weight and Life Changes

  • Significant weight fluctuations (gain or loss) post-Procedure.
  • Pregnancy or hormonal changes, which may alter body contours or skin integrity.

Patients are advised to disclose all relevant factors during consultations. The Clinic and Surgeon reserves the right to postpone or decline Procedures if these factors pose undue risks.

7. Patient Responsibilities

Achieving optimal Outcomes requires active Patient participation. Patients are responsible for:

  • Providing a complete and accurate medical history, including conditions, medications, and
    lifestyle habits.
  • Adhering strictly to pre-operative instructions (e.g., ceasing smoking, adjusting
    medications).
  • Following post-operative care guidelines, including wound care, activity restrictions,
compression garment use and medication regimens.
  • Attending all scheduled follow-up appointments.
  • Promptly notifying the Clinic of any complications, concerns, or changes in health.

Non-compliance with these responsibilities may compromise Outcomes and may affect eligibility for revision options under related policies.

8. Photographs and Outcome Assessment

Pre- and post-operative clinical photographs are standard practice at SRGN Clinic to:

  • Document baseline appearance for reference.
  • Aid in surgical planning and objective evaluation.
  • Assess Outcomes systematically.

These photographs are confidential and form part of the Patient’s medical record, used solely for clinical purposes in compliance with data protection laws. Outcome assessments will be based on objective clinical findings, Surgeon expertise, and evidence-based criteria, rather than solely on subjective Patient perceptions.

9. Managing Dissatisfaction with Outcomes

In the event of dissatisfaction with aesthetic or functional Outcomes, Patients should contact SRGN Clinic promptly for assessment.
Common scenarios include:

  • Ongoing healing processes (e.g., residual swelling or immature scars).
  • Natural evolution of results over time.

The Surgeon will evaluate concerns through consultation, allowing adequate time for healing (typically at least 6 months post-Procedure). No guarantees are made that all concerns can be fully resolved.

10. Revision Surgery

Where clinically indicated and appropriate, revision surgery may be considered to address or improve Outcomes. All such requests will be handled in accordance with the SRGN Clinic Revision Surgery Policy. Eligibility for revision depends on:

  • Clinical necessity and safety.
  • Tissue quality and healing status.
  • Compliance with prior care instructions.
  • Realistic potential for improvement.

Revision is not guaranteed, and additional risks apply. There are no warranties regarding Revision Outcomes.

11. Financial Considerations

Fees for cosmetic Procedures cover surgical expertise, facility use, staff, materials, and standard post-operative care.
Dissatisfaction with aesthetic Outcomes does not entitle Patients to refunds, as variability is inherent in surgery. Concerns will be addressed through:

  • Complimentary follow-up assessments.
  • Clinical management.
  • Revision options, if applicable, under the relevant Policy.

All financial matters are subject to the SRGN Clinic Refund and Cancellation Policy.

12. Psychological Suitability for Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic Procedures are most suitable for Patients who:

  • Maintain realistic expectations and understand surgical limitations.
  • Seek genuine improvement rather than perfection or external validation.
  • Are psychologically stable and free from undue external pressures.

Surgeons may screen for suitability and decline Procedures if they deem them not in the Patient’s best interests, aligning with professional guidelines from bodies such as the Royal College of Surgeons.

13. Commitment to Patient Care

SRGN Clinic is dedicated to:

  • Upholding high standards of surgical excellence and ethical practice.
  • Providing transparent, honest communication throughout the process.
  • Offering supportive management of Outcomes and concerns.

Patients are encouraged to voice any issues promptly to enable appropriate assistance.

14. Review and General Provisions

This Policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure compliance with:

  • General Medical Council (GMC) guidance.
  • Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulations.
  • Evolving best practices in cosmetic surgery.

SRGN Clinic reserves the right to apply, interpret, or amend this Policy on a case-by-case basis at its sole discretion, while acting reasonably. This Policy does not affect the Patient’s statutory rights under applicable laws. This Policy is governed by the laws of England and Wales (or the jurisdiction where the Procedure is performed). Any disputes arising from this Policy shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts in that jurisdiction. Patients are advised to seek independent legal or medical advice if they have questions about this Policy. By proceeding with a Procedure, the Patient acknowledges that they have read, understood, and agree to be bound by this Policy. This Policy is effective as of 1st March 2025, and may be updated from time to time. The latest version will be available on the SRGN Clinic website.
